Paramore

Paramore's rise has been the result of consistent hard work since Hayley first met Josh Farro (guitar, age 19) and his younger brother Zac (drums, age 16) while they were together in school four years ago. After adding Jeremy Davis (bass, age 22), Paramore was formed in 2004 and started playing their first shows.

Over the past two years, Paramore, the rapidly emerging pop-punk quintet from Tennessee, has been building a near-deafening 'next big thing' buzz. Driven by riveting live shows and the undeniable charisma of their frontwoman, 18-year-old Hayley Williams, they have captivated an increasingly rabid following. Confronted by the double-edged sword of overwhelming early praise, Paramore has risen to the challenge and recorded an album that happily delivers on all the claims made on their behalf. With their new Fueled By Ramen collection, 'RIOT!', they announce that they have the talent, the passion, and the songs to take themselves to the next level.

Pacman ready to sign Diaz fight pact

It’s just a matter of time before Manny Pacquiao signs the contract for his June 28 fight with David Diaz at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

According to Franklin Gacal, legal counsel of the Filipino boxing superstar, his negotiations with Top Rank president Bob Arum in the US worked out so well.

Gacal left for the US last week and has had several meetings with Arum, who will promote the coming fight with the Manny Pacquiao Promotions.

“At my level the negotiations ended well,” Gacal told The STAR via e-mail.

“And it’s now subject to the final approval of, and signing of the contract by Manny upon my return on May 2,” said Gacal who refused to mention any figure stipulated in the contract.

Arum, however, has said that Pacquiao stands to earn as much as what he got for his rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez last month in Las Vegas.

For that fight, Pacquiao reportedly received a guaranteed purse of $5.5 million and took close to $2 million on pay-per-view shares and sales of merchandise.

Gacal said Pacquiao liked what he heard over the telephone.

“As per my telephone conversation with Pacman he is happy with the deal I have agreed in principle with Top Rank which has scheduled a series of city tours to be done by both fighters to promote the bout,” Gacal said.

Arum has scheduled a press conference on May 13 to be attended by Pacquiao and Diaz in Los Angeles.

Gacal added that Top Rank and MP Promotions have agreed that two Filipino boxers will be in the undercard. But he did not mention any names.

Pacquiao is in Gen. Santos City, catching up on his studies and trying to keep in shape by running in the morning and playing basketball in the afternoon.

He said he intends to fly to LA on May 10 but before that might spend a couple of days at a local gym in Gen. Santos City.

ARUM NOT HAPPY WITH PACQUIAO’S DELAYED ARRIVAL

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum admits he is “not very happy” about Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao’s failure to show up for a planned press conference on May 3 forcing Arum to postpone the event for May 13.

In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Arum said “I am not very happy about it but we’ll make the best of it.”

He said he had spoken to celebrated trainer Freddie Roach and indicated “we have a busy promotional schedule” stating that Pacquiao won't get time to rest on his off-days “because that’s the price he has to pay.”

Arum said plans call for Pacquiao to fly to Chicago “which is quite a distance”, San Francisco , San Diego and Phoenix as well as to hold “a public workout in a park in Los Angeles where the area is mostly populated by Filipinos.”

Arum took a good-natured dig at reports that Pacquiao had gone scuba diving in Cebu saying “scuba diving is not good for anyone, including the fish."

In fact there has been some concern that while Pacquiao appears to be relaxing, Diaz is training hard in Chicago where he told well-known boxing writer Ron Borges, “Pacquiao is a top fighter in his prime but when I look at him I see a guy I can hit real easy. I see a guy I can beat.”

Arum as well as Roach have cautioned Pacquiao about taking Diaz lightly. He told us that Diaz “is not only a tough fighter he is a determined fighter. He stays in there and has a rock hard chin. Manny has to be prepared to go twelve tough rounds with him.”

Pacquiao is scheduled to leave for Los Angeles on May 10 after he attends the oath taking of the new Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief-of-Staff Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano who is reportedly a close friend.

David Diaz Believes He Can Beat Pacquiao

In 1996, Zab Judah was supposed to represent the United States in the light welterweight division at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Somebody got in his way. Nobody could quite believe it.

Ten years later, Jose Armando Santa Cruz was supposed to win the WBC interim lightweight title at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Somebody got in his way. Nobody could quite believe it.

A year after that fight, Mexican legend Erik Morales was supposed to start his final comeback by winning the WBC lightweight title at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., just outside of Chicago. Somebody not only got in his way, he sent Morales into retirement. Nobody could quite believe it.

This pesky person nobody seems to believe in is now preparing to face Manny Pacquiao for that same version of the 135-pound title in Pacquiao’s first foray into the lightweight division. Manny Pacquiao is supposed to win when he steps into the ring at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on June 28. If he doesn’t, nobody will quite believe it.

Nobody but David Diaz, who has made a reputation and finally a few dollars by upsetting other people’s apple carts as well as other people’s fighters. Diaz is a humble guy by nature and so would be the first to tell you maybe he’s nothing special in the world of prize fighting. He’ll tell you that but it doesn’t mean he won’t intend to beat your ears back after he’s through talking.

That’s because he’s learned what so many in boxing never have understood. He’s learned that all the talking in the world and all the expectations of the world don’t mean a thing once the fighting starts. And fighting is something he’s quite willing to get involved with, even against someone universally recognized as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on this planet.

“I’ve been wanting a big fight like this for a long time,’’ Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KO) said from his home in Chicago last week. “I feel pretty good about this fight. Pacquiao is a top fighter in his prime but when I look at him I see a guy I can hit real easy. I see a guy I can beat. I honestly feel that.’’

That would put Diaz in a very small minority in boxing, for Pacquiao has long been viewed as one of the very best fighters in the world after winning world championships in three weight classes (flyweight, super bantamweight and super featherweight) and beating up so many Mexican fighters he has been labeled the Mexican Assassin by less than pleased Mexican boxing writers.

Meanwhile, Diaz has long been looked upon as the B side in all of his biggest victories dating back to when Judah was the heavy favorite to win a slot on the Olympic team despite Diaz’s 175-16 amateur record. That upset didn’t seem to change many opinions of Diaz and the ones that have followed haven’t either.

By now this might be a bit insulting to some fighters but Diaz long ago outgrew such an outlook. To him, there are only a few people picking against him that would affect how he sees himself or how he sees his chances against even someone like the popular and heavily-favored Filipino.

“It’s the way it’s been for a long time,’’ Diaz said of his constant role as a fistic underdog. “By now you’d think some people would give me a little bit of a chance but that’s all right. The only thing that really matters is when your hand is raised.

“I’m pretty good at blocking out that sort of negative stuff and I stick to that. I’ll do everything possible to be ready. After I beat him maybe we can put a stop to that kind of thinking but I don’t get insulted by it. I really don’t. I don’t care about those people (who say he has no chance against fill in the blank). I don’t talk to them all the time.

“If my wife or my brother said ‘Pacquiao’s going to beat you’ then we got a problem.’’

They are saying no such thing of course. Instead they are holding fast to a faith in Diaz that took a decade to be rewarded but finally was when he came from behind to stop Santa Cruz and win what was then the WBC interim lightweight title. Later he would become the fully recognized champion after Joel Casamayor failed to make weight in a fight with Diego Corrales 14 months ago, and he would get his first big win by outfoxing and outfighting Morales last August to retain a title he was never supposed to have won in the first place.

Now he stands to take another step up boxing’s ladder, one leading to his biggest payday, but one that is supposed to be little more than a well-paid fistic funeral for him. Even Diaz’s promoter, Bob Arum, has said as much.

When Pacquiao barely escaped with a split decision in his rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez there was pressure from a lot of corners for an immediate rubber match. Arum refused, saying there needed to be some “air’’ between Pacquiao and Marquez before they squared off a third time with millions of dollars at stake. The implication was Pacquiao could get such air facing Diaz in a low risk confrontation that would allow him to adjust to fighting at 135 pounds before taking on the more formidable Marquez a third and final time.

This might not have sounded so bad had Arum not been Diaz’s promoter. More than a few boxers would have been mighty peeved at Arum for representing them in such a fashion but Diaz understands Pacquiao fights for Arum too and has produced far more income for him. In the bottom line business of boxing, that’s what makes alliances.

“I understand,’’ Diaz said. “It’s business. Manny is the guy bringing in all the chatter. If you let that offend you it disturbs everything you’re trying to do. You start worrying about the wrong things.

“He gets the filet mignon and I get the New York cut but that’s better than nothing. The important thing is winning the fight. When I beat him I’ll be the guy they’re talking about. Until then, if you take that kind of thing personally you corrupt your heart.’’

That is one thing Diaz will never do because his heart is in large measure his greatest fighting asset. He is not a terrific puncher or the greatest boxer in the division. He is, some will argue, just a journeyman. He would call himself something else.

David Diaz would call himself a professional, which means something in boxing. It means he comes to the arena ready to win and with the intention of bringing bad intentions with him into the ring. He comes with a belief in himself he knows few outside his corner share but which he understands is all that really matters.

Zab Judah had more believers than he did. Santa Cruz had more believers than he did. Morales had more believers than he did. So there is no surprise to learn the same is true with Pacquiao, who most observers think is second only to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. on the mythical pound-for-pound list.

Frankly, Diaz might put him there himself. But that doesn’t mean he won’t arrive in Las Vegas in two months intending to put him on his back.

“What Pacquiao does is make you fight his type of fight,’’ Diaz said. “In my case that’s fine because his type of fight is my type of fight. Pressure, that’s my best offense and my best defense.

“He’s an all-out type of fighter. He throws in volume so I have to match that. Punching power wise I don’t know who’s stronger but my determination will be the difference. This fight means more to me than it does to him.’’

What Diaz believes is that Pacquiao will come to Las Vegas with the same attitude Morales had when he came to Chicago. With fighters like that, fighters who have for so long been among boxing’s elite, there is a natural cockiness, a dismissive way they look at guys who have come up the way Diaz has, which is the hard way.

That does not mean they don’t train for them or that they don’t respect them on some level but there is a clear belief that such an opponent is not really on their level. Many times they are right. Sometimes, as Morales found out, they are not but that knowledge often comes too late.

What Manny Pacquiao thinks of him David Diaz does not know. Nor does he care. All he cares about is that he has two more months to get ready to show him he’s more than the world thinks he is.

“Look, this is a tough fight,’’ Diaz said. “I know Pacquiao can fight. But I don’t know any fighter who doesn’t want to be in this type of fight.

“This is the kind of fight people will talk about long after you’re done and gone. This is the biggest fight of my life. Bigger than when I won the title. Even bigger than beating a legend like Morales because Pacquiao is a guy in his prime. He’s a guy who’s been beating up people in different weight classes. Now I have a title he wants and he’s trying to put me on the mat. It’s one of those fights where you got to prove yourself to yourself.

“That’s really all I care about. Proving to myself what I can do in boxing. Becoming champion at one time was something I didn’t think I’d achieve. I thought maybe I was just another pro. Now I know I can be more than that. I’m not content with what I have.

“I’m finally getting paid what champions get paid. This is a fight where I can set up my kids for college. It’s about making their life better but win this one and next fight maybe I can set up David Diaz.’’

That’s why he’s up every day before dawn running in Chicago’s early morning light. It’s why he leaves the house by mid-morning for the Jab Gym, where he trains for two to three hours. It’s why when he comes home he spends more time thinking about Manny Pacquiao than he does about himself.

Halfway across the country, in a gym in Hollywood, CA. where Manny Pacquiao has begun training, Diaz’s opponent is thinking about many things. Not very often, Diaz believes, is he thinking about him.

That doesn’t insult him either. He’s used to that too. Just like he’s used to leaving the ring after the battle has been fought with a lot of skeptics saying, ‘How’d that happen?’’

“If he saw my fight with Morales he’ll be in shape,’’ Diaz said defiantly. “If not, that’s his fault, not mine. I’m coming to win.’’

Linkin Park is a rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Since their formation in 1996, the band has sold more than fifty million albums and won two Grammy Awards.[4][5][6] They achieved mainstream success with their debut album, Hybrid Theory, which was certified Diamond by the

RIAA in 2005.[7] Their following studio album, Meteora, continued the band's success, topping the Billboard 200’s album charts in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world.[8]
Recognized for their adaptation of the nu metal genre into a radio-friendly yet densely-layered style in Hybrid Theory and Meteora,[9][10] the band moved away from this and explored a variety of other genres in their latest studio album, Minutes to Midnight.[11][12] The album topped the Billboard Charts and had the third best debut week of any album that year.[13][14] They are also known for their several collaborations, most notably with rapper Jay-Z in their mash-up album Collision Course, and many other artists on Reanimation

My Chemical Romance (often shortened to MCR or My Chem[1]) is an American rock quintet that formed in 2001. They signed with Reprise Records the next year and released their major label debut Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge in 2004. The album was a major commercial success, selling over one million copies due in part to the success of the singles "Helena", "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", and "The Ghost of You". The band followed this success with 2006's The Black Parade, featuring their hit singles, "Welcome to the Black Parade", "Famous Last Words", "I Don't Love You", and "Teenagers". Will Kevin Johnson end up like Manny Pacquiao?

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA—Never mind Manny Pacquiao’s forgettable experience on the hustings.
Opinionated members of the sports glitterati are not content merely endorsing political campaigns.
They’d rather join the wild and wooly world of politics themselves.
The latest world sports celebrity to test the waters is ex-NBA star Kevin Johnson.
Will he end up like Pacquiao, who lost face and oodles of money in a failed attempt to win a congressional seat in South Cotabato?
It will be up to the voters of this state capital come June 3.
Until Johnson declared his candidacy for Sacramento mayor, the incumbent Heather Fargo was expected to win in a romp. Now Heather’s climb to a third term suddenly became stiffer.
Will her honor, the mayor, pull a Darlene Antonino Custodio (who knocked out Pacquiao in the South Cotabato political ring)?
She could, despite Johnson’s star power—which has turned a once obscure mayoral campaign into national news, much like Pacquiao’s ill-fated congressional run attracted so much sports press mileage worldwide.
Unlike Pacquiao’s, Johnson’s campaign surrogates are many and moneyed.
The latest to headline his fundraiser was a former nemesis and the more famous of the National Basketball Association’s Johnson men of long ago—Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Magic, who clashed with Kevin in many an NBA tussle when the now mayoral candidate was the premier guard of the Phoenix Suns, headlined a getting-to-know-his-namesake party lately.
The tab, $75 per. If the guests wanted a picture with Kevin, it cost $1,150 each.
Like Manny, Kevin is not without cash. He lent his own campaign a cool $500,000. But he would need a lot more dough in an effort to unseat Heather, his chief opponent who has picked up campaign cash and a few high-profile supporters herself.
It will be a test of experience versus youth, celebrity bling versus self-made political luster. Fargo has led the city in the last eight years as it strives to reach the next level.
Sacramento’s mayor is the leader of a city that is the cultural, educational, business and governmental center of a four-county metropolis. The region has become home to a steady stream of new residents, including Filipino-Americans from the nearby San Francisco Bay area.
As California’s capital, Sacramento is at center stage of governmental policy for the entire state—the sixth largest economy in the world.
After his NBA days, Kevin Johnson became a business entrepreneur and urban real state developer like Magic. He is a genuine homegrown celebrity, having been born and bred in the city’s tough Oak Park neighborhood.
Johnson’s political leaders say the relationships their candidate has created throughout the United States as an NBA star and businessman will benefit Sacramento.
Meantime, Fargo, a former state employee who became the city’s first full-time mayor after an amendment to the city charter in 2002, is taken aback. She said running against a celebrity is different.
She told the Sacramento Bee, the Pulitzer Prize-winning local newspaper, that Johnson is “not expected to know the answers; he's not asked as tough questions. Obviously he has a lot more financial resources. He does not have to worry about campaign limits… On the upside, it also brings a lot of attention to the campaign. More people know there’s a mayor’s race in town than would have otherwise.”
Fargo has kept on baiting Johnson into debating her on the issues confronting the capital city. So far, Johnson has agreed to participate in one debate, a 90-minute forum with him and the other candidates.
Since announcing his candidacy last month, life on the campaign trail has considerably become nastier for Johnson. Already, he had to go to the media to belie allegations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls in Phoenix and Sacramento.
This after one of the candidates, bounty hunter and bail bondsman Leonard Padilla, released a police report on the Phoenix case to the Sacramento press.
